College interview and its importance to international students

Who is an international student?

Let’s define “international student”. From the standpoint of admissions officers, this term could be either (a) a non-U.S. passport holder studying in high school in the U.S. or (b) a student who, regardless of their passport, is studying outside of the U.S.

So can a US passport holder bypass an interview? The answer is NO in cases where the college demands an interview as an admission process. Moreover, in these Covid times where the world has moved from offline to online, personal interview is instrumental along with the above diagram elements for admission.

Why is an interview an important process?

Interviews can personalise the entire admission process as it puts a face to the name and gives a personal touch. Both the admission office and the students Interviews are an excellent way to demonstrate your interest in a particular school. Admissions offices realize that it may be difficult for an international prospective student to travel to the campus for an interview. You should contact the international admissions officer for your location via email and ask if it is possible to arrange an interview via Skype.  It’s a great way to show a school that you are very interested in learning more about it and to demonstrate your keen interest in it. The interview is also a great way for you to learn more about the school.

Things to keep in mind during the interview

The candidate has to have a very calm mind and should be positive. There should be backups so that any disappointments the student can opt for the second best. Some of the important things to be kept in mind are as follows

  • Dress appropriately
  • Research about college
  • Keep your questions ready
  • Bear in mind the interview etiquettes 
  • Expect the unexpected
