How to choose your electives?

Choosing the right high school electives can make a powerful impact on the student’s collegiate experience. While the electives a student chooses can be his or her area of interest, aligned with college goals or a completely new topic which the child can learn by putting in extra efforts. Even though not a favourite of the student it still can help in the long run.

If the child is not sure about the electives that he’s going to take he can always opt for free electives, they are the safest. Second comes area of interest and thirdly comes the selection of an elective that can enhance the selected field of study.  There is no point in cramming too many electives so much so that there is no time left for the student to do justice to all of them.  The child has to know his limitation and in consultation with a career counsellor can opt the right blend as per his requirement.

Electives should compliment and supplement and child’s career decision. Just by looking at one side of the coin the child can lose out on possible opportunities.

There are certain steps a student should keep in mind before choosing the electives, as follows

  • List down all the electives on priority basis ( first priority being area of interest, 2nd being the complimenting subject to you undergrad course, 3rd being a backup option ) This list should be in tune with the subjects offered by your school.  For eg a Biology student can take up photography as elective where in the student can make beautiful picture college on biodiversity or rare human disorders or forests
  • Since SAT scores are important aspect in college selection the student has to take an elective that will help him enhance the performance in SAT scores.  Complimenting to the main Stem / undergrad course an elective works for the better benefit of the student , provided he is able to put in the extra effort.
  • The student should consider the social aspect of the course and the class format that is convenient to him.
  • The student should not focus excessively on electives to achieve a prospective major , instead should seek to learn more about it by taking relevant coursework.
  • Last but not the least the student must enjoy the knowledge gained from his electives so that he can learn and expand his horizon in any field.
